This is not a rare book at all. I had rested it on the bookshelf just yesterday and was so upset when I couldn’t find it last night for my late reading. Have you ever misplaced one of your most recent books and picked up an old friend to pass the time until the new shows up? Today I will read from the newest and tomorrow I will capture from the rare temporary book/friend. The book for today is hot off the press and so far a book that might make me call in sick because I love the way it reads. The page I will be quoting is so fitting for today’s world I am so glad I thought of a small page number. I hope you enjoy the passage enough to run out and purchase this one!

HOPE ( When Everything Seems Hopeless) by: Dr. Tom Dooley, PH.D. ( pg:1 )

This book was written especially for hurting individuals, those who are buried under the snowdrift of hopelessness and left there as half-dead. May this book breathe a measure of hope, which is the bedrock upon which genuine faith is established. Without hope there can be no faith. And without faith, one cannot please God.

Dr. Tom Dooley

“How sweet is that?” I am so glad that this book found it’s way into our home. No, it was not from my friends rare collection but I could not resist.

My hands landed on the ( book ) friend:  blink -by the author of The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell -The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.

A few sentences from page 23 ( You will need to read this wonderful book if you haven’t already )

But Gotman, it turns out, can teach us a great deal about a critical part of rapid cognition known as thin-slicing.  “Thin-slicing” refers to the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behavior based on very narrow slices of experience.

Go to www.gladwell.com to find out more about this author and book form of communication.

Tomorrow we will meet another friend off  the book shelf. It might be a book dating back well into the years of great classic’s. You will have to wait and see.

I was looking through the stack of snail mail in my hand after retrieving it from the mail box and on the way back into the house, one letter caught my fullest attention. Return address, a law firm. I then stopped in the middle of our sidewalk to open this piece with total curiosity. To my surprise I had been left a dear friends entire library collection. Including the books she had written and the typewriter she had used to write them. Totalling 1,700 in the collection.  I fell to my knees and wept. Glad that she thought enough of me to carry out such a wonderful act of kindness, sad because I would rather still have her by my side, I was very moved needless to say.

A year before my friends passing,  she had sent me a letter discussing the need to weed out her possessions that read:

” The only things I find it truly difficult to eliminate are books. I positively need them, they are as inspiring as rainbows, as interesting as an ethnic menu, and as necessary as old friends.”  Marjory Bartlett Sanger

At Davis Executive Training  we understand that all forms of communication are very important. The written form of communication can move us to act or not to act. After becoming the new caretaker regarding the private library. I feel a need to share the contents of this rare collection. What are friends for if you can’t share them? After such a long friendship with such a wonderful writer and friend I am sure she would be more than proud for me to share.

“A Reading From Our New Friends” starts tomorrow! The book and author will be a surprise to both of us. I will close my eyes and reach for one book. Think of a number and then quote from that page.

From Nancy and old friends to our new friends we hope you all enjoy communicating as much as we do.

We all get e-mails with list of things.  I got this one today and it just “Rang True”.  Its a little long, but good.  Hope I can practice most of the items on this list.

HAVE A GREAT YEAR IN 2009!

40 Tips for a Better Life – 2009

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

3. Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.

4. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, ‘My purpose is to __________ today.’

5. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

6. Play more games and read more books than you did in 2008.

7. Make time to  practice meditation and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.

8. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six .

9. Dream more while you are awake.

10.  Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants. Eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

11. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.

12. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

13. Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

14. Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, or issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

15. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime .

16. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

17. Smile and laugh more. It will keep the NEGATIVE BLUES away.

18. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

19. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

20. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

21. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

22. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.

23. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

24. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: ‘In five years, will this matter?’

26. Forgive everyone for everything.

27. What other people think of you is none of your business.

28. REMEMBER GOD heals everything.

29. However good or bad a situation is, it will change

30. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

31. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.

32. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

33. The best is yet to come.

34. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

35. Do the right thing!

36. Call your family often. (Or email them to death!!!)

37. Each night before  you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

38. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

39. Enjoy the ride.. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don’t want a fast pass.. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

40. Please Forward this to everyone you care about. I just did.

May your troubles be less, May your blessings be more, May nothing but happiness come through your door!

I would like to wish everyone logging in a very Happy New Year!

Now as promised the Three T’s we teach in our training other than the three ”Tell em ” T’s mentioned on the last blog.

  1. Touch
  2. Turn
  3. Talk

Who can figure the above three T’s out? Feel free to contact us if you would like to know more about how these are used during a talk. They are very helpful techniques everyone should know.

Have you heard the three T’s being used a lot lately? I’ll remind you what they stand for:

  1. Tell’em what you’re going to tell’em
  2. Tell’em
  3. Tell’em what you told ‘em

Now you have the most used three T’s. Tomorrow I will give you another set of T’s that will be useful for you to use in your next talk. Hope this is helpful if you have not heard this yet? And a refresher if you have to use it.
